Brava Home Mobile App
Overview
The Brava Home app is our digital recipe book, a guide and companion to the Brava connected oven. Its primary goal is simple: make finding and preparing recipes as easy as possible. It strives to be as intuitive as old fashioned paper recipe cards, while layering in the magic help in the kitchen that connected devices can offer.
Understanding Our Personas
Based on Facebook and purchase data
The design team at Brava worked closely with our internal data analytics team to ground our personas in purchase data. Though the personas above existed before launch, the data were able to help us focus our efforts.
Homescreen User Goals
Recipe discoverability
About 20 new recipes are created by our culinary team each week and are added to the Brava and app. For the design of the app homescreen, I wanted to make the experience of finding recipes beautiful and intuitive, in both browse and search use cases. Beta user surveys verified the need for getting busy users to recipes in as few taps as possible.
Enabling a great First Run
Effortless handoff from mobile app to Brava
Having hundreds of recipes on Brava means that we needed to pair a curated homesecreen with a simple recipe preparation flow, so users can make use of this content effortlessly. The Send to Brava action at the top of each recipe card in the mobile app lets users load the recipe on Brava with a single tap.
App Visual Design
Design & business goals
For the recipe cards I leveraged familiar patterns from paper cards. On the Brava itself, we use a horizontal flow with steps long the bottom of the screen that can be navigated in a linear or nonlinear manner while doing cook prep.
Search & Filtering
Recipe discovery
Search is used here to navigate to a single ingredient directly. Filters can be combined with search, or used alone.
Visual Designs
Food centric visuals
We’re lucky to work with a brilliant culinary and marketing team, so to add delight we focused on letting the bright beautiful food shots shine in the final designs.
Brava in Use
A feature designed for busy families
From our initial beta testing through launch, the Brava in Use cook display feature has been one of the most widely used features in the app. Roughly 75% of active users make use of it on most cooks for checking in on meals while busy.

iJustine’s look at Brava and the app
At Brava striving for a simple user experience requires us to collaborate deeply across design, product, research, engineering, and very importantly culinary. We’re thrilled to see that come together here in Justine’s review.
